Remembering Larry Dodd

We are taking a moment to remember a wonderful man, husband, father, friend and business owner. We had the good fortune to meet Larry Dodd in March of 2020. He was a man of honor who lived with integrity and love. Here is his story as told by his family and a few photos they thought you might enjoy. Larry's Auto Clinic was founded in Myrtle Beach, SC in 1985 by Retired Master Sergeant Lawrence "Larry" E. Dodd. A native of Hagerstown, MD, Larry grew up working hard on the family's dairy farm and learned to work on equipment. In 1965, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably for 21 years. A standout, master technician in radar and electronics, he received many awards, specialty assignments, and instructor/supervisor positions. Throughout his career in the USAF, he spent his spare time working in machine shops and building gas engines and race motors.

Upon retirement at the age of 40, he went to work at Corky's Exxon in Surfside Beach. It did not take long for him to foster friendships in what was then a small military/beach community. Others recognized his depth of knowledge and expertise, and he was encouraged to go into business for himself. With wife, Shari, 9-year-old daughter, Azure, and 3-year-old son, Ryan, following his every move, he founded Larry's Auto Clinic with three main ingredients. They were an immense technical knowledge base, well developed diagnostic skill, and a pure desire to help people.

With little business acumen, it was hard in the beginning. With Shari's support, he built a modest garage, purchased a small tow truck, and went to work every day. The rapidly evolving nature of automobile technology and the automotive sales industry presented constantly evolving challenges for independent garages, but his moral compass and intense mechanical expertise sustained Larry's Auto Clinic. His motto was "Quality, Honesty, and Pride in Auto Repair." He cared about people and treated people with fairness and respect.

As Myrtle Beach grew, so too did the need for RV repair. He capitalized on that need and became the go-to maintenance facility for the gasoline motorhome chassis. Customers became friends, and his reputation and business became known across the country His fun-loving demeanor and ability to explain things to people in a way that they understood grew a loyal base of customers from many states. His network of fellow experts grew and went as far back as his USAF days. When he couldn't figure something out, he knew who to collaborate with in order to solve any complex problem for his customers.

In November of 2019, at the age of 75, Larry was diagnosed with cancer of the pancreas, which progressed rapidly and took his life on August 14, 2020. He was surrounded by the love and care of his closest family and friends, and he was concerned for those that he loved and those that he helped throughout the years.

Just prior to his passing, Larry, Azure, and Ryan had the pleasure of meeting Larry and Barb White, also from Maryland. Having a background in the automotive repair industry and similar values, they made the decision to purchase Larry's Auto Clinic and continue to help people with their automotive repair needs. We honor the legacy that Larry Dodd created, and are please to introduce Larry and Barb to our customers and native community. They have worked hard to make Larry's Auto Clinic their own and to continue to serve our area with Quality, Honest, and Pride in Auto Repair.
